About me
Michael Fontaine is the Associate Director for the Safety, Operations, and Traffic Engineering team at the Virginia Transportation Research Council, which is the research division of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). In this role, he manages the VDOT research program across a broad spectrum of areas, including traffic control devices, highway safety, freeway operations, congestion performance measures and emerging data sources, intelligent transportation systems, and connected and automated vehicles.
Prior to becoming Associate Director, Dr. Fontaine served as a researcher at VTRC and at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. He has also served as a faculty member at Old Dominion University and as adjunct faculty at the University of Virginia. He has written over 55 peer reviewed journal articles and served as principal investigator or co-PI on over 40 projects.
Dr. Fontaine currently serves as the chair of the Transportation Research Board Urban Data and Information Systems Committee (AED20), and was previously a member of the TRB Traffic Monitoring Committee (ACP70) and Work Zone Traffic Control Committee. He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia.
